The Whisper Comes First
After a year that stretched me in ways I did not expect, I found myself longing for something simple:
a slower rhythm,
familiar places,
conversations without urgency.
And then, unexpectedly, I met a painter approaching retirement.
As he spoke about his life, I found myself listening closely.
Not only to what he had done,
but to the way he carried his story.
There was no trace of perfection in it.
No straight line.
The Whisper
From a very young age, he knew he wanted to paint.
Life, of course, had other ideas.
Different paths appeared.
Yet the desire remained.
Like a whisper that never truly leaves.
One day, he decided to follow it.
Then he told me a story.
One of his first opportunities as a painter came before he felt ready.
He admitted that he presented himself as a professional even before he fully knew what he was doing.
"I was lucky they didn't stay there watching me."
The technique was not there yet.
The confidence was not there either.
But the willingness was.
So he tried.
And tried again.
Hour after hour.
Mistake after mistake.
Until, little by little, his hands began to understand what his heart had already known.
As I listened, I thought about purpose.
How often it begins exactly like this.
Not with certainty.
Not with mastery.
But with a feeling.
A curiosity.
A small voice asking for a chance.
The whisper comes first.
The technique comes later.
We rarely feel ready when purpose calls us.
We simply decide whether we will answer.
And maybe that is why this conversation touched me so deeply.
It reminded me why I created this space.
Unfold Purpose was never born from certainty.
It was born from a feeling.
From the belief that sometimes we need to begin before we know how.
Before we have the right words.
Before we understand the path.
Simply because something inside us is asking to move.
Serving your Purpose
I observed that before creating anything, he listens.
Not to the walls he will paint.
Not to the materials.
But to the people.
Their dreams.
Their ideas.
The feeling they hope to create.
Then he tries to bring it to life.
When he finishes, he smiles and says:
"Another happy customer."
There was something beautiful in that simplicity.
A reminder that our gifts are not only ours to enjoy.
They are also meant to serve.
Purpose asks us to contribute.
To place our talents in the hands of something larger than ourselves.
To help.
To create.
To offer.
Keeping Creativity Alive
And yet, as our conversation continued, he showed me another side of his work.
Not the walls he paints for others.
But the canvases he paints for himself.
Colours.
Textures.
Shapes.
Ideas.
Experiments that nobody had requested.
Creations born from curiosity alone.
Some would eventually find a place on a wall.
Others existed simply because they wanted to be created.
What struck me was not the paintings themselves.
It was what they represented.
Even after all these years, he was still exploring.
Still learning.
Still allowing himself to be surprised.
In a world that changes faster every day, I found myself wondering:
How do we remain faithful to our purpose over time?
How do we continue evolving without losing ourselves?
How do we keep the spark alive without becoming trapped by routine?
Perhaps the answer is not to abandon our purpose.
Perhaps it is to keep reinventing the way we express it.
The painter's work serves others.
But his canvases nourish something different.
They nourish the source from which his work emerges.
They keep his artistic spirit alive.
As I reflected on this, I realized it was a lesson I needed too.
A reminder that serving a purpose and feeding it are not the same thing.
Sometimes, in our desire to contribute, we become so focused on creating value for others that we forget to nurture our own sense of wonder.
We focus on outcomes.
On responsibilities.
On mastery.
And all of that matters.
But purpose cannot live on mastery alone.
It also needs curiosity.
A space to explore.
A space to play.
A space to create without needing a reason.
Even Unfold Purpose began this way.
As an exploration.
A place to follow questions rather than answers.
To create before knowing exactly where the journey would lead.
To trust a whisper before understanding its destination.
Where Whisper Meets Curiosity
Perhaps purpose was never meant to be something we find once and for all.
Perhaps it is a relationship.
A conversation between who we are,
how we serve,
and who we are still becoming.
A practice of staying true to what matters,
while remaining open to change.
To learn.
To evolve.
To begin again.
Over and over.
The whisper may start the journey.
Curiosity keeps it alive.
And creativity allows us to keep becoming, without forgetting who we are.
Perhaps that is what purpose really asks of us: not to arrive, but to keep unfolding.
Reflection Prompts
Where in your life are you waiting to feel ready before taking the first step?
What whisper have you been hearing lately?
How are your gifts serving others today?
What do you do that nourishes your own creativity?
In what areas of your life are you being called to reinvent yourself while staying true to what matters?
When was the last time you created something simply for the joy of exploring it?
