There are moments when dance and corporate life seem worlds apart. But every time I step onto the stage, I’m reminded that the art of connection—of truly feeling and transmitting emotion—is universal. Whether I’m moving to music or presenting an idea, the essence is the same: it’s about presence, authenticity, and empathy.
The Subtle Dialogue of Dance
When I step onto the dance floor, there’s a silent conversation unfolding—a dialogue not just between myself and the music, but also with everyone who’s watching.
It’s never black or white; it’s a living, breathing exchange.
First, I listen. Not just to the melody, but to the emotion behind each note, the rise and fall of the singer’s voice, the story woven into the lyrics. I let the music move through me, searching for the feeling it wants to share. As I move, I sense the audience—their energy, their anticipation, their silent responses. Sometimes it’s a spark in someone’s eyes, a collective intake of breath, or the way the room seems to hold its own heartbeat. I watch their faces, searching for that moment when my movement touches something in them.
This is where the real magic lies: in the ability to recognize the emotion in the music and then transmit it outward, letting it ripple through the space and reach the people watching. It’s a dance of empathy—feeling deeply, expressing honestly, and tuning in to the subtle feedback that comes from the audience.
The more I am present, the more I live my purpose, the easier it becomes to create this connection. Authenticity is the bridge. When I truly feel, others can feel it too.
The Corporate Bridge: Pitching as Performance
The same is true in the corporate world, especially when delivering a pitch. Creating a presentation is much like choreographing a dance. You start by tuning into the “music” of your company’s goals and the message you want to share. But the real art is in how you deliver it—how you read the room, sense the energy, and adapt your message in real time.
During a pitch, I pay attention to the faces around the table, the posture of my colleagues, the tone of their questions. Are they engaged? Curious? Skeptical? Just as in dance, my goal is to recognize these emotional cues and respond authentically, letting my own passion and belief in the message shine through.
When I am truly aligned with my purpose, my words carry more weight, and my presence becomes magnetic.
Whether on stage or in the boardroom, the ability to recognize and transmit emotion is what transforms a performance—or a pitch—into a memorable, impactful experience. It’s not about perfection; it’s about connection.
Reflection Prompts:
When was the last time you truly listened—to music, to a colleague, or to yourself?
How do you recognize and respond to the emotions of others, whether in a performance or a meeting?
What helps you move from simply delivering a message to truly connecting with your audience?
In what ways does living your purpose make it easier for you to be authentic and present?
